Why local matters: Supporting Indie, small, and handmade businesses

First and foremost, you're getting a product that someone took the time to create with their own two hands. Their sweat and tears went into it. The love for their craft and passion for their cause can be felt in each piece. There is something special about a pair of earrings or a purse with a story behind it. I love hearing the WHY behind a brand. Personally, I'm a sucker for an upcycled anything. Not only does it being new life to old things, it keeps them from going into our landfills. It's the main reason I started sewing clothing all those years ago. I still enjoy doing it today.

Local isn't limited to "things". For instance, I use locally grown / sourced fruits and vegetables for The Lemon Jar. Being an Urban Farmer myself, I know the impact of getting undercut by big box, for a lesser quality and likely genetically modified product. Purchasing from farmers markets or produce stands puts food on a family's table. It purchases their kid's baseball uniform. It makes a real and tangible difference. If you need some insanely beautiful upcycles and want to help support a Queen and her family, go check Heather out. I don't even have words for the pieces she makes. ( Instagram )

Does it really matter? The answer is 1000% yes. Liking, following, and sharing posts on social media is a great way to support too! Getting a name out there, monetized profiles, commenting on posts... all of it. The Kardashians don't care if you follow them and like their post, but Tara from Cleveland (Facebook) does a little happy dance when you order a homemade shirt or a cake from her. (I don't know if she really dances or not, but I do know for sure it made her whole day) Why? Because you ordered it from HER and not Walmart. I pinky promise, you can taste the difference. Her cupcakes are knock your socks off good!

Facts: supporting local businesses creates jobs, keeps money within the community, and contributes to a more vibrant and sustainable local environment. A higher percentage of revenue stays within the local area. The reinvestment strengthens the local tax base, funds public services, and fosters a unique community character through local sourcing, charitable giving, and innovation. Small businesses often source their products and services locally, which reduces transportation costs and reduces carbon emissions. The biggest bonus? A local economy driven by a diversity of small businesses is more resilient and often better equipped to withstand an economic downfall. Purchasing local helps other businesses thrive and continue to grow. It's an intricately woven circle of life and sustainability.

Next time you have an opportunity, swing by your local farmer's market. Buy your eggs from the neighbor down the street with chickens. Hit up that SAHM who makes kick ass sourdough bread or buy your lunch from the food truck on the corner. Not only are you supporting your community by doing so, but you're also likely to find that the food / products are healthier and better for your home.

That's why local matters. It's a better choice for everyone and can make a significant on our economy. #FDJT #FICE #FREEPALESTINE
